Home Humidity Remedies

Is it muggy in your house this summer? Humidity can really put a damper on things during Richmond, VA summers. Your home’s humidity levels should be between 30-50%; anything higher is uncomfortable and could even lead to mold development. We want to make sure you stay cool and safe for the rest of the summer. Here are some tips for beating the humidity and staying comfortable during the last few hot summer months:

  • Ventilation – Humidity can quickly spike in rooms that have been closed off; especially if they’re rooms where water is often present, such as the bathroom. This is why ventilation is key. To reduce overall humidity, be sure to open up closed spaces whenever possible to get rid of moisture.
  • Cooking – When it’s really hot outside, it might not be the best idea to bake a casserole or boil a pot of pasta for dinner. Avoid the humidity caused by water vapor and leave the baking and boiling for cooler days and wintertime.
  • Fans – Ceiling or floor fans can be a great, simple way to ventilate a room. Keeping the air circulating in an otherwise stagnant room will definitely help to reduce humidity – especially if the fan is aimed at you!
  • Dehumidifier installation – With humidity in our area, tips can be helpful, but they can only do so much. For a superior control solution, a dehumidifier installation is the way to go. These systems will control the humidity level of your home and ensure it stays in the optimal 30-50% range.
